It is time to take Presidents’ Day back from those who would primarily sell us goods at reduced prices. It is time to remember what our Presidency means. The back page of a New York Times & page 8a of USA Today 2/13/18 features a full-page Ad of Presidential Quotes that reads:
“In anticipation of Presidents’ Day consider the following words of counsel & caution.”
Below this headline is listed nearly 60 quotes, chiefly from previous presidents – some famous like Washington and Lincoln – but including lesser luminaries like Martin Van Buren, Rutherford B. Hayes and Calvin Coolidge. Also quoted are Martin Luther King, Jr. and Albert Einstein as well as Ben Franklin. The last notable is because the ad is sponsored by the author of What Would Ben Say? (Tom Blair)
This Ad reminds us that the Presidency has been occupied by men who sought mostly to put the office above them-selves.
This Presidents’ Day Ad is an “affirmation” of what makes America the Republic – that’s the envy of the world. Not our wealth or might, but our opportunities supported by a free & open society backed by laws and enforced with righteous justice. Here is a sampling of some of the quotes featured:

The Effect. Reading these quotes on the Presidents’ Day ad is at once serious, but also inspiring. For most of American history, we have been a people disposed to do what’s right rather than what is expedient. Slavery and the Civil War scar us with wounds that have yet to heal, but the pain of them reminds us that we still have work to do.
We are a nation of Immigrants, mixed with races of every nation, we are not defined by ethnography but rather by our values. Isn’t this truly what makes us all Americans? Becoming begets responsibility. And so it is fitting that the Presidents’ Day Ad ends with the words of the President who guided us during our most divisive time, Abraham Lincoln.
“I appeal to you again to constantly bear in mind that with you, and not with politicians, not with Presidents, not with office-seekers, but with you, is the question, ‘Shall the Union and shall the liberties of this country be preserved? Abraham Lincoln
